Weblog Security is a Significant Consideration for Businesses Entering the Blogosphere

MyST Blogsite delivers a fully branded and customized set of weblogs with security issues handled
Blogs can be effective marketing tools if they are used wisely, while syndicated feeds can improve communications.

In covering this week's Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco, InfoWorld reports on the use of blogs and syndicated feeds for marketing and communications in business. The article outlines some of the management issues facing companies that wish to adopt these technologies: keeping data secure, keeping sites up and running, and integrating content with existing infrastructure. Last month, Information Week ran a similar article stating that nearly 1/3 of businesses surveyed were fully engaged in Web 2.0 technologies but a majority of businesses were still feeling wary about embracing Web 2.0.  Security was cited as a major issue.

Also this month,  David Sifry posted a report showing the state of the live web in which he says that there are 120,000 new weblogs created daily.  If not there yet, many businesses realize that the blogosphere is in their near future and are asking about the security issues they'll need to address.  One of the benefits of choosing MyST Blogsite is placing the burden of such concerns on MyST instead of your inhouse IT staff.  Below is a list of security issues to consider.

  • Protecting your blogsite against hackers and vandalism.
  • Keeping your blogsite secure against disaster with failover systems and regular backups.
  • Securing your site against spam traffic. (See Ridding the World of Offensive Weblog Posts).
  • Keeping your data center physically secure with locks and redundant power sources.
  • Password protecting the domain that hosts your blogsite (if data is intended for private use only).
  • Creating user-level credentials to control content authorship and site administration.
  • Creating portions of your blogsite that are public while maintaining private channels for in-house use only.

When you deploy a MyST Blogsite, these issues are handled for you. You receive a turnkey system that meets your specific security needs with as much or as little involvement from your internal IT department as you desire.
